Artist statement -Steven Lubahn
My interest lies in the spiritual. I believe art exists as a means to grasp the very fundamental questions of our humanity, serving as a means of unifying both internal and external concerns. Art is my guide to truth and way toward deeper meaning. I am interested in giving my experiences and ideas a place to breathe and a path to emerge.
Process is very important to me. Work is action, it engages me and allows me to return to a natural rhythm. Drawing is a very pragmatic way to explore abstract ideas with the intimacy of materials. It is through this process that a dialogue takes place, intuitively bringing the image into being.
The structure of my work is poetic and lyrical and generally non-linear. I prefer to work metaphorically, creating images with the same characteristics as the matter it represents. The resulting image has no specific meaning but remains in a state of limitless interpretation. A work of art is not an end. Therefore, It is not the image itself but what the image directs your attention to that is most important.
